Irondale, AL — Joey Flowers of Marathon Electrical Contractors in Birmingham has been named the Construction Safety Professional of the Year (CSPY) by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC of America), one of the construction industry’s highest national safety honors. Flowers received the award during AGC of America’s Winter Construction Safety & Health Conference, held this week in Glendale, Arizona.
The CSPY award is presented annually to an in-house construction safety professional who demonstrates exceptional leadership, innovation and measurable results in advancing jobsite safety and strengthening safety culture. The honor recognizes individuals who make a lasting impact on protecting construction workers and improving project outcomes nationwide.
Flowers serves as Director of Safety, Training and Risk Management for Marathon Electrical Contractors, where he has spent more than two decades building proactive, people-focused safety programs. A U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran with multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Flowers brings a service-driven approach to safety leadership rooted in accountability, preparation and teamwork.

Throughout his career, Flowers has emphasized integrating safety into everyday operations through job hazard analyses, pre-task planning, hands-on training and strong leadership accountability. Under his leadership, Marathon Electrical has achieved significant reductions in recordable and lost-time incidents, along with sustained improvements in OSHA incident rates.
Flowers holds a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University, with coursework through the University of Alabama, and maintains numerous industry certifications, including NCCER Master Trainer and OSHA credentials.
“This recognition reflects the collective effort of leadership teams, supervisors and field employees working together to look out for one another,” Flowers said. “Safety success is always a team accomplishment.”
