Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Dave McCormick (R-Pa.) have introduced the bipartisan Safe Roads for Those Who Serve Act, legislation aimed at improving protections for the workers and first responders who do their jobs alongside live traffic every day. For highway contractors, the bill reflects a growing recognition in Congress that work zone and roadside safety must remain a national priority, not just for motorists, but also for the construction workers, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, tow truck operators, and others who face serious risks on the nation’s roads.

The legislation would take several practical steps to address those risks. It would (1)  require states to improve data collection and analysis on highway worker injuries and fatalities, (2) establish a highway worker safety plan when those incidents rise over a two-year period, (3) create a broader public awareness campaign on roadside worker safety, (4) continue federal research and outreach efforts, and (5) require major infrastructure grant applicants to include safety protections for roadside workers and the traveling public in their applications.

AGC has long argued that stronger work zone protections are needed and has made highway worker safety a key part of its surface transportation reauthorization recommendations, including a greater federal focus on the people building and maintaining the nation’s roads. The proposed legislation includes many of AGC’s recommendations and recognizes what contractors already know: the workers who build, maintain, and respond on our roadways deserve stronger protections.
