Administration Infrastructure Plan Gets Capitol Hill Focus
Five Cabinet secretaries testified before the Senate Commerce Committee on March 14 in support of the Trump Administration’s infrastructure renewal plan which calls for $200 billion in direct federal funds that would be used to leverage $1.5 trillion in infrastructure investments over 10 years. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, was joined by the secretaries of Labor, Commerce, Energy, and Agriculture, and said that crafting a measure with bipartisan support is a priority for the administration. In response to questions about how to pay for the federal share of the initiative Secretary Chao responded that, “everything is on the table.” The previous day the Commerce Committee heard from state and local officials about their reaction to the proposal most stated that while additional funds are needed at the federal level, the most important thing Congress can do is stabilize the traditional, recurring funding programs.
